WE CARE about the Environment

At Gillespie House Inn we care about the environment. As a Bay of Fundy Recommended Experience Operator we have adopted a “Code of Environmental Excellence”. Our management and staff have implemented a number of standard practices that are compatible with sustainable tourism. With your help we can do our part to protect the environment for future generations.

Recycle:	Blue waste receptacles are provided in each room for recyclable materials. In Nova Scotia, all paper, beverage containers, plastic and cans are recyclable and should be placed in the blue receptacle with lids removed.
Composting:	Food wastes and other organic waste are composted on site. The mature compost is spread on the flower and vegetable gardens as a soil amendment and natural fertilizer. Organic wastes not suitable for back yard composting are placed in separate containers and sent to the central compost facility. Place your compost in the garbage and it will be separated by staff.
Towel Reuse:	To reduce consumption of hot water and detergents our guests are presented with an option: Towels on the floor or in the tub will be removed and washed; towels hung on the towel bar will remain for re-use.
Cleaning:	Gillespie House uses micro-fibre cleaning cloths where ever possible and other environmentally friendly cleaning products to reduce the use of cleaning compounds.
Lights:	Where practical, lower wattage light bulbs and fluorescent light bulbs are used to reduce electricity consumption.
Solar Energy:	Six solar panels on the Carriage House roof preheat our domestic hot water supply to reduce fossil fuel consumption.
Heating:	Our heating system has been recently converted to a radiant heating system to reduce consumption of fuel oil and improve occupant comfort.
Gardens:	Our flower and vegetable gardens are fertilized with compost and lime, no chemical fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides are used.
Lawn Care:	Our lawns are chemical free. Lime is applied each spring and fall. No chemical fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides are used on the property.
Air Quality:	The Inn offers a smoke free environment to protect the air quality for our guests.
